Swinburne students win SAS Track category at design competition

KUCHING – Swinburne students performed well at the recent Online Innovate Malaysia Design Conference (IMDC) 2020, the grand finale of the Innovate Malaysia Design Competition.

367 teams from 28 universities from all over Malaysia took part in the competition that covered technology and application areas including integrated circuits, electronic systems, IoT, 3D modelling, Big Data, mobile and cloud apps, automotive, smart applications, green technology, bioengineering, and other tech innovation areas. Only 59 teams were shortlisted to compete in the grand finale.

Two undergraduate electrical and electronics engineering students Sung Yun Ping and Able Chai Bing Zhe took first prize in the SAS Track category for their project entitled ‘DHL Express Design Challenge: Enhanced Customer Experience and Improving Operation Efficiency.” The intelligent logistic application uses smartphones to track the location and ETA of courier drivers and plan the route for the courier drivers.

Supervised by Swinburne’s Deputy Head of School of Engineering Dr Chua Hong Siang, the students took home RM5,000 cash reward and SAS Certified AI & Machine Learning Professional certificate.

Also in the same SAS Track category, Swinburne’s Elwin Chan Kok Wei won second prize for his project entitled ‘Highly accurate power outage predictive model using ensemble learning techniques: A case for Sarawak Energy’, while in the Sarawak Energy Design Challenge category, Atiqul Islam grabbed the consolation prize for a project entitled ‘Ensemble model for power outage prediction’.

The IMDC was open to final-year undergraduate engineering and computer science students in Malaysia to promote innovative culture in engineering design work, tackle real-world problems with practical engineering solutions, and produce the brightest talents for product development, further research, and commercialisation.

The event was organised by CEDEC, Google, Intel, Keysight Technologies, MathWorks and Microsoft, and supported by Ministry of Education, CADVision Systems, Tech Source, MDEC, IEEE, IET, IEM, SMA, and the Sarawak Government. Participating design challengers were Continental, Cenergi, CREST, DHL, LONGi, SAINS, Sarawak Energy, and SONY.
