KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus’ Bursa Young Investor Club (BYIC), in collaboration with Bursa Malaysia, hosted an insightful seminar titled “Understanding Stock Market 101” on 8 November 2024.
Held at Swinburne Sarawak, the event attracted approximately 130 students eager to deepen their understanding of the fundamentals of the stock and derivatives markets and gain valuable insights into the roles played by Bursa Malaysia and its derivatives segment.
The seminar kicked off with a keynote address by Ms Liyana Abd Majid, Vice President of Product and Development, Derivatives Market, Bursa Malaysia. She introduced attendees to the basics of the stock market and derivatives, setting the stage for a robust exchange of ideas and knowledge.
The event also featured a dynamic forum discussion on “Unlocking Potential: Navigating the World of Structured Warrants” with industry experts Mr Savinraj Singh (Head of Trading, Affin Hwang Investment Bank), Mr Tucker Cheah Tuck Yan (Senior Analyst, Structured Products and Warrants – Equity and Commodity Derivatives, Maybank Investment Bank) and Mr Muhammad Afiq bin Suhaimi (Equity Derivatives Sales, Macquarie Warrants Malaysia). The panellists explored the intricacies of structured warrants, offering real-world strategies and actionable insights.
Other presentations included “Unlocking Opportunities: Things to Know Before You Start Trading Futures” by Mr Eric Lim Szen Chun, Senior Manager of Business Development and Strategy, Group Futures and Commodities, RHB Investment Bank, as well as “Stepping into the World of Stocks and Futures” by Mr Brian Jeremiah Chan, Senior Marketing Executive, Dealing, Phillip Capital.
Reflecting on the event, BYIC President Britney Ten Ying Xi said, “Organising ‘Understanding Stock Market 101’ was an incredibly valuable experience for our club. The seminar offered practical knowledge about the Malaysian stock market, especially structured warrants, which we don’t often explore in depth during classes.
“The insights from industry experts provided real-world applications of theoretical concepts like market volatility and risk assessment, boosting our confidence in analysing and making investment decisions. Events like this bridge the gap between theory and practice while opening doors to career opportunities in finance,” she added.
Club advisors Dr Yii Kwang Jing, Dr Maggie Tang May Jean and Shella Georgina Beatrice emphasised the seminar’s broader benefits, stating that such initiatives expose students to real-world investment practices, enhance their financial literacy and improve job and internship prospects in the financial industry.
The seminar aligns with Swinburne’s Moon Shot 1 (every Swinburne learner gets a work experience) and Moon Shot 2 (every Swinburne graduate gets a job), reinforcing the university’s commitment to equipping students with practical, industry-relevant knowledge.
