KUCHING – Swinburne Sarawak made a name for itself when its second-year accounting major student Lim Yee Wen scored a remarkable 73% marks for the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) examination paper.
Lim was part of the first batch of Swinburne Sarawak’s students and ACCA students from other higher learning institutions to sit for the Professional Level paper examination, Paper P1 Governance, Risk and Ethics in September. The results announced on 16 October showed 57% passing rate for Swinburne Sarawak, surpassing the ACCA World Pass Rate of 53%. Further analysis shows the Pass Rate of Swinburne Sarawak’s students with CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) above 3.00 at 75%.
In June this year, Swinburne Sarawak and ACCA inked an agreement for the ACCA Accelerate programme that enables the university’s second-year accounting or double major accounting and finance degree students to sit for the ACCA Professional Level papers. The Accelerate programme not only gives students an early start to a career in accounting, finance, business and management, but also other benefits such as an accelerated path to ACCA membership, reduced exemption fees and practical assistance and guidance in regards to their studies.
Commenting on her success, Lim said it took sheer determination and constant revision to succeed in the examination.
“For students who are also sitting for this exam, my advice is for them to be disciplined and not to give up easily. Do not hesitate to refer to your lecturers for guidance and support,” said Lim.
Swinburne Sarawak’s Dean of Faculty of Business and Design Associate Professor Dr Lee Miin Huui said this is a remarkable achievement for Swinburne Sarawak considering this is the university’s first ACCA examination.
She opined that the Accelerate programme provides good platform for students who want to pursue a degree and a professional qualification at the same time, adding that this also allows them to save time as they do not need to wait until graduation to sit for the examination.
“One of the many benefits of concurrently pursuing your degree and professional qualification is students are able to get the necessary support and advice from fellow students and lecturers. Upon graduation, students may start their careers with dual qualifications, hence, enhancing the chances of employability,” said Associate Professor Dr Lee.
Lecturer in accounting and ACCA at Swinburne Sarawak’s Faculty of Business and Design Fung Chorng Yuan attributed the success of the students to the dedicated full-time and experienced lecturers on campus where students are given personal attention to guide them throughout their learning experience.
“I hope Lim’s achievement will boost other students’ confidence in obtaining ACCA qualification while pursuing their degree,” remarked Fung.
Swinburne Sarawak offers business courses in foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Its Bachelor of Business (Accounting) major course provides students the knowledge and skills in the core areas of financial accounting, management accounting, finance, tax and auditing, in addition to economics and company law, while the Bachelor of Business (Accounting and Finance) double major introduces students to the concepts of accounting, management, statistics, microeconomics and business law.
The courses are accredited and recognised by professional bodies such as CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ), the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), ensuring learning experience that are aligned to current industry needs and producing graduates who are career-ready.
