KUCHING – For the third time running Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus has been crowned champion in the annual MASISWA Sports Carnival Sarawak Zone.
The Australian university branch campus was declared the overall winner at the closing of the private institutions of higher learning games, at its campus on 9 November.
The winning streak of the university looked unstoppable in the three-day event which started on 7 November.
It was a clear winner after collecting a total of 103 points on the final day. Its nearest rival was second place winner Institut Teknologi Maklumat Nusantara (NIIT) with 25 points, while in third place was Kolej Sunway Kuching with 21 points.
In badminton, Swinburne Sarawak continued its tight grip and went to win first place after beating Kolej Sunway Kuching. In third place was Institut Eksekutif.
It again led in basketball, introduced in the games for the first time. Its accurate long shots and slam dunks took it to the top spot over SEGi College Sarawak. In third place was UCSI University.
The impressive shooting and dribbling skills of teams A and B of Swinburne Sarawak contributed to their seizure of the first and second places, respectively, in futsal. Multimedia College Sarawak (MMC) trailed in third.
Swinburne Sarawak also went on to win the 10-pin bowling event, followed in second place by Kolej Sunway Kuching and third by SATT College.
In netball, the Australian university was again ahead while Kolej Technology Sarawak TCS and University College Technology Sarawak was second and third, respectively.
In table tennis, Swinburne Sarawak fought its way to the lead and remained there. Closely behind in second place was Institut Technologi Maklumat Nusantara. Kolej Sunway Kuching took third spot.
Swinburne Sarawak again showed its skills in chess, taking the first and second places through Kok Wei Tze and Clement Ting Pek Wen, respectively. Chia Jia Chen of Lim Kok Wing Sarawak Campus came in at third place.
In volleyball Lim Kok Wing Sarawak Campus emerged winner. Swinburne Sarawak managed to come in at second spot, followed by Kolej Tecknologi Sarawak in third.
Swinburne Sarawak’s Achilles heel appears to be in sepak takraw where it did not make it to the top three spot. Instead, Unitar took the first and second places while International College of Advanced Technology was third.
A total of 16 private institutions of higher learning competed in the annual state level games.
