KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with East China Normal University (ECNU), focusing on academic and research collaborations.
The MoU was one of several signed between Sarawak’s universities and institutions with their Chinese counterparts on 1 September 2023 at Hilton Beijing Wangfujing, China. The signing of MoUs was one of the activities which took place in conjunction with the China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) 2023 held at the China National Convention Centre in Beijing from 2 to 6 September 2023. CIFTIS 2023 included a Sarawak Pavilion spearheaded by the Sarawak Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED).
Through the MoU inked between Swinburne Sarawak and ECNU, both institutions will jointly explore and collaborate in research and development projects supported by China and Malaysia; build virtual joint laboratories and facilitate the exchange of academic knowledge; and jointly explore possible enhancements to Swinburne Sarawak’s undergraduate and postgraduate programs as well as academic exchanges so that they are relevant to the needs of the academic work.
Signing the MoU on behalf of Swinburne Sarawak was its Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer Ir Professor Lau Hieng Ho in the presence of Professor Dr Moritz Müller, Head of the Aquatic and Environmental Research Sciences (AQUES) Research Group at Swinburne Sarawak. Meanwhile, ECNU was represented by its Vice President Professor Hongliang Gu in signing the MoU in the presence of Professor Shan Jiang from ECNU’s State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research (SKLEC).
The MoU exchange was witnessed by Sarawak Deputy Premier YB Datuk Amar Haji Awang Tengah bin Ali Hasan, who is also Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment.
Swinburne is an Australian university based in Melbourne, Australia. ECNU is one of the prestigious universities in China. In 2017, ECNU was selected as one of the Category A universities in China’s Double First-Class University Initiative, a higher education scheme launched by China’s Ministry of Education with the aim of developing elite Chinese universities into world-class institutions by 2050. ECNU has two campuses in Shanghai with over 35,000 students, almost 5,000 faculty and staff, over 6,000 international students and close to 1,500 overseas scholars visiting every year.
Swinburne Sarawak has collaborated with ECNU, especially SKLEC, since 2016 in research activities and staff and student exchange.
