Another outstanding ACCA exam results achieved by Swinburne’s Sarawak campus

KUCHING Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus added another feather in its cap following the impressive performance of the university’s accounting student in the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) March 2018 examination.

In the results released on April 16, final-year student Jocelyn Liew Huan Yie who sat for the exam under the ACCA Accelerate Programme scored a remarkable 70% in Paper P3 Business Analysis. Previously, the former SMK Kuching High student also did well in Paper P1 Governance, Risk and Ethics with 67%.

In comparison, the ACCA World Pass Rate for Paper P1 was 51% while the pass rate for Swinburne’s Sarawak campus was 54%. The university achieved a significantly better results for Paper P3 at 74%, exceeding the World Pass Rate of 52%.

This is the third ACCA exam for students of Swinburne’s Sarawak campus. The past exams held in September and December 2017 also saw its students accomplished outstanding results surpassing the ACCA World Pass Rates.

The students’ success is attributed to the full-time lecturers’ industry experience and the availability of comprehensive learning materials. Students have access to Swinburne’s virtual Learning Management System where resources are shared online including course notes, past exam papers and selected videos to enhance the learning outcome.

According to Swinburne’s Sarawak campus Dean of Faculty of Business, Design and Arts Professor Lee Miin Huui, the excellent results are the outcome of trust between the students and the lecturers.

“Students have high confidence in our academic team members to help them excel in their ACCA exams. In fact, their relationships are more like peers rather than students-lecturer. Such learning environment has instilled a positive culture of learning and it has definitely reaped the fruit,” said Professor Lee.

Meanwhile, ACCA lecturer and discipline leader for professional courses at Swinburne’s Sarawak campus Fung Chorng Yuan remarked that the university will commence ACCA classes in the evening for the upcoming June intake.

“This June, we will offer ‘Strategic Business Leader’, a paper in the newly introduced ACCA syllabus. With the evening classes, we are confident that we can guide more students to pass the ACCA exam since our passing rates have consistently surpassed the world pass rates,” opined Fung who has over 20 years’ experience in teaching ACCA.

Through the ACCA Accelerate programme agreement signed with ACCA in June 2017, Swinburne’s Sarawak campus second-year accounting or double major accounting and finance degree students can sit for the Professional Level papers that provide them an early start to a career in accounting, finance, business and management. The programme also offers other benefits such as an accelerated path to ACCA membership, reduced exemption fees and practical assistance and guidance in regards to their studies.

The university’s School of Business offers Bachelor of Business (single major) in Accounting, Finance, Human Resource Management, International Business, Management, and Marketing, as well as two double major options in Accounting and Finance or Management and Digital Media. These three-year courses have intakes in January, February, September and October.

The courses are regularly monitored for their academic quality, career relevance, and compliance with Malaysian and Australian qualifications standards. Furthermore, they are accredited and recognised by CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ), the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
