Biography

Dr. Ngu Ik Ying is currently a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Business, Design and Arts.  Prior to joining Swinburne Sarawak, she was the head of the Media and Communication department at Curtin Malaysia. She has also worked as a journalist and news stringer with various news outlets, such as The Star publications and Malaysiakini online.

Throughout her 15 years in academia, Dr. Ngu has won several teaching awards, including the Curtin Malaysia Excellence in Teaching Award (2021) and Students’ Choice Award (2021, 2023), and was nominated for Curtin Australia Teaching Excellence for University Associates Award (2021). She is a Fellow and Mentor of the Higher Education Academy and a member of the Malaysian Social Science Association and the Australian Association of Internet Researchers.

Dr Ngu obtained her PhD in Media, Culture, and Creative Arts from Curtin University Australia under the Curtin Offshore Partner Research scholarship. Her thesis explored the communicative ecology of Malaysian activists and their mobilization strategies. Her research interests include activism, media literacy, and media consumption, particularly in Borneo. As a researcher, she is also a reviewer for Sage Open and other indexed publications.
