KUCHING – Two senior academics from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus have been elevated to Fellow by a British and an Australian professional body.
Associate Professor Dennis Wong, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science, was elected a Fellow of Engineers Australia where he is registered as a Chartered Professional Engineer.
Professor Alexander Gorin, from the same faculty, was awarded the same grade of Fellow by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in the UK. Gorin is registered as a Chartered Engineer with the UK body.
The grade recognizes unusual distinction in the profession.
Sibu-born Wong received a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Electronics and Communication Engineering, and PhD in Signal Processing from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics, University of Liverpool.
He joined the then School of Engineering at Swinburne Sarawak as a lecturer in 2004 and was appointed senior lecturer three years later.
From 2011 to mid-2012, Wong was an associate professor at Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University in Suzhou, China.
He returned to Swinburne Sarawak and held the post of Associate Professor and Acting Dean for the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science, and became the Dean in August 2013.
Wong is also a Chartered Engineer registered with the Engineering Council UK, a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
In 2014, he was elected as the inaugural treasurer of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Malaysia Chapter and was vice-chair the following year. In February this year he was elected the inaugural chair for IEEE Malaysia Sarawak Subsection.
He has a passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and works closely with local schools in promoting STEM.
Gorin joined Swinburne Sarawak in 2011, and developed and coordinated the university’s Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Chemical Engineering program.
He has a conjoint Master Degree in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mathematics from Tomsk State University, a top Russian university, and a PhD in Engineering Science from the Russian Academy of Science.
He was awarded a Higher post-doctoral Doctor of Science in thermophysics and molecular physics and the title of Professor.
His employment experience includes the Russian Academy of Sciences and top Russian universities such as Novosibirsk State University, Tomsk State University, the University of Auckland, and Curtin University Sarawak Malaysia.
Gorin was a visiting professor at the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, National Academy of Sciences in Sofia, Bulgaria, and the University of Havana/Supreme Institute of Studies in Havana, Cuba.
The New Zealander has published four books on engineering and over 200 papers. More than 25 students have been awarded a PhD degree under his supervision.
