KUCHING – Swinburne’s Head of School of Business Associate Professor Dr Lim Weng Marc is among the recipients of the 2019 Ten Outstanding Young Malaysians (TOYM) award presented by Junior Chamber International (JCI).
At the award ceremony held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching recently, Dr Lim received the award from Datuk Dr Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Junaidi who represented Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Originated from the JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World (TOYP) programme, the JCI TOYM programme seeks to accord recognition to young Malaysians between the ages of 18 to 40 whose dedication to their profession or life undertakings has resulted in exceptional achievement in the form of significant contributions to the progress or welfare of the community at large, and to the advancement of their respective field of endeavour.

A panel of seven judges led by JCI TOYM 2019 chief judge Adjunct Associate Professor Datin Enn Ong Siok Ean determined Dr Lim’s selection as the award winner in the Academic Leadership and/or Accomplishment category. The decision on the top 30 finalists was based purely on application write-ups, whereas the decision on the top 10 winners was made after an interview with all the finalists.
Commenting on the awards, Dr Lim said that there are not many prestigious awards that recognise the noteworthy achievements of youth today.
“The JCI TOYM is one of the very few, if not the only youth-focused awards in Malaysia that acknowledge and showcase youth today as agents of change and disrupters whose impact extends beyond glass ceilings. This is most evident through the highly commendable achievements of each and every one who made it to the top 30”, said Dr Lim.
The prestigious event was also attended by several students from Swinburne where they had the opportunity to build and strengthen their network among other young pioneering Malaysians. For international student from Bangladesh Md Asif Ul Islam, 24, it was an eye-opening experience that had encouraged him to follow in the footsteps of the awardees.
“The accomplishments of the award winners are certainly very inspiring. I am also delighted that our lecturer was selected as the award winner,” added the ICT student.
Meanwhile, marketing student Felix Wong, 22, was also impressed with the outstanding contributions of the award winners.
“I am truly convinced that millennials today are highly capable of creating positive change,” commented Wong.
The honourees of JCI TOYM 2019 will have the opportunity to represent Malaysia to vie for JCI TOYP together with other honourees from up to 100 countries. Past honourees of JCI TOYP include US President John F Kennedy, legendary singer Elvis Presley, renowned motivational speaker cum author Anthony Robbins, and Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan.
