KUCHING – A group of 46 students from the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science, Swinburne Sarawak recently visited Taiyo Yuden (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd’s newly completed manufacturing plant at Sama Jaya High-Tech Park. Led by the Employability Team and Ir Dr Elaine Yeu Yee Lee, the visit allowed the students to explore one of Malaysia’s leading sustainably advanced and environmentally friendly factories. Taiyo Yuden specialises in the production of multilayer ceramic capacitors.
During the visit, Mr. Paw Yew Kiong, the General Manager of Taiyo Yuden, presented an overview of the company’s profile, operations and values. This was followed by a process and product introduction from Mdm. Elaine Chung Yuin Chieh, the Acting Section Manager of HR Development, during which students gained valuable insights into the intricate processes behind the production of multilayer ceramic capacitors.
They were also introduced to several energy-efficient practices, including using energy-efficient production equipment, and solar power generation through rooftop installations. These efforts align with the company’s commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Additionally, students had the opportunity to engage with Mr. Hairoddin Bin Sugiman, HR Senior Officer, who delivered a career talk highlighting the company’s career progression opportunities. By applying for positions and joining Taiyo Yuden, employees have the chance to gain international exposure through the Global Secondment and JTY Trainee Program, which involves assignments in Japan before returning to Kuching to continue their careers.
The visitors also interacted with Puan Masirah Binti Jamlin, HR Development Senior Officer, who provided further details about the internship programs and encouraged the students to participate in their internships. These internships provide the students with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in their field and secure appropriate department placements.
Taiyo Yuden remains committed to supporting educational initiatives and providing industry exposure to students through similar engagements in the future, reinforcing the importance of such industry-academia collaborations.
Ir Professor Su Hieng Tiong, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science, emphasised the value of such visits in shaping students’ professional development. “Industry visits such as this are crucial in bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world industry experience,” he said.
Prof Su encouraged students to take full advantage of such opportunities and to immerse themselves in the knowledge shared during such visits.
All the students participating in the visit are enrolled in Swinburne’s engineering programs, including electrical and electronic engineering, and robotics and mechatronics engineering. The visit provided them with invaluable real-world industry experience. Swinburne’s Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program plays a role in bridging the gap between classroom learning and practical applications.
At Swinburne University, every student is guaranteed a WIL experience through internships, placements or industry-linked projects. These opportunities equip students with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, enhancing their employability and preparing them for the workforce of the future.
The Employability Team at Swinburne Sarawak plays a pivotal role in organising such visits, ensuring financial support and making logistical arrangements to provide a smooth and enriching experience for all involved.
Since its establishment in 2000, Swinburne Sarawak has achieved a 93% employability rate for its graduates, within six months after graduation.
