KUCHING – The School of Chemical Engineering and Science of Swinburne Sarawak has secured two finalist spots in the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Malaysia Awards 2021, demonstrating its excellence once again in the field of chemical engineering.
The IChemE Malaysia Awards is an annual award that celebrates excellence and innovation in various fields of chemical engineering, and provides an avenue for teams, companies, or individuals to have their projects recognised on national level. Due to the pandemic, the winners for this year’s event will be announced in IChemE’s virtual ceremony that will take place on 1 October 2021.
Nominated for the Young Researcher Award is chemical engineering lecturer Dr How Bing Shen who has published more than 50 journal articles and has accounted for an H-index of 14 in Google Scholar. His research interests include sustainable biomass value chain; energy planning and carbon management; process integration and optimisation; multi-criteria decision-making; and P-graph application. This is Dr How’s second consecutive year to be shortlisted as a finalist.
According to Dr How, although he is considered a young researcher, it should not be a constraint but rather, become the ‘fuel’ to strive for better outcomes. He thanked Swinburne Sarawak for the support and his research partners for their collaborations.
Also shortlisted as a finalist for the third consecutive time is the Swinburne Sarawak’s IChemE Student Chapter under the Student Chapter award category. This distinguished award acknowledges the accomplishments and activities of all the IChemE Student Chapters across Malaysia.
As the Student Chapter’s advisor, chemical engineering lecturer Dr Elaine Yeu Yee Lee recognised all the efforts of the Student Chapter as she witnessed how the committee has grown and supported each other throughout the years.

“Even though they failed sometimes, nothing will stop them from trying. After several entry submissions, we were shortlisted as a finalist for the first time under the leadership of former president Andy Law in 2019. The continuous growth of the Student Chapter led by former presidents Andrea Lee and Natalie Ho has earned it the ‘highly commended’ for 2020 entry.
This year, we are thrilled to be shortlisted for the third time under the leadership of President Abdulqader bin Sahl. My heartfelt gratitude to the committee for their continuous commitment. This achievement will definitely boost our efforts to develop and continually improve our services,” Dr Yeu said.
During her leadership, former president Ho effectively planned activities and events such as talks and webinars through online platforms due to the COVID-19 restrictions.
‘I am proud of our Student Chapter for working hard to uphold our mission and provide virtual events to encourage strong engagement among students despite the pandemic. Being nominated as one of the finalists in IChemE Malaysia Awards 2021 for the third time in a row is truly a remarkable accomplishment,” she said.
Meanwhile, Abdulqader expressed his appreciation to his team members and advisors, and hope that the Student Chapter continues to provide insightful and interactive events to the community, as well as provide a platform for students to collaborate and develop their soft skills regardless of their roles in the chapter.
