KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus won first prize in the Sarawak Information System Sdn Bhd (Sains) Open Source Competition, recently.
Wendy Japutra Jap, Hsu Mon Lwin, Jofry Hadi Sutanto, Leo Ho Vinh Nghiep and Nikuni Mahesh Jain, took home the top prize of RM3,000 and certificates for their Sub Surface Profiling System.
The Sub Surface Profiling System is designed to help civil engineers perform interpolation or extrapolation of soil profiles.
Traditionally, soil profiles are drawn manually, but this takes time and is prone to human error. However, the Sub Surface Profiling System addresses these issues by creating a program that generates a soil profile according to soil data. This is faster and more accurate than the traditional method.
A web-based application, the Sub Surface Profiling System allows users from any where to register themselves to gain access to and contribute to the database.
Tan Sri Dr George Chan, Deputy Chief Minister of Sarawak, gave away the prizes to the winners at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.
Organised by Sains for the first time in 2004, the Open Source competition aims to promote the use of open source software and encourage homegrown ICT talents to explore the usage of open source technology to develop software for business applications.
This year’s competition was targeted at the new generation of software engineers, developers and programmes in institutions of higher learning in Sarawak who have the interest and talent but lack the resources to develop their visions.
