Swinburne Sarawak is official CPA Australia tuition provider

KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus has been approved as the only tuition provider for the CPA Program in East Malaysia and Borneo.

The university is the first such centre in Borneo to be approved by the CPA Australia.

The initial intake for the tuition course, which runs for about six weeks, starts in mid-March.

The course will consist of a series of weekly lectures and workshops leading up to the CPA Program examinations.

Classes will be conducted in the evenings and/or weekends to suit the needs of candidates who are in full-time employment.

Registration is now open for the inaugural segments to prepare students for the professional level examinations on the week of 18 April. These are Financial Reporting, Malaysia Taxation, and Advanced Audit and Assurance.

“A CPA is a finance, accounting and business professional with a specific qualification. The CPA Program is a rigorous, educational and experience program, comprising of education segments and integrated workplace learning,” said Associate Professor Dr Lee Miin Huui, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Design.

“The CPA designation is therefore a mark of high professional competency in depth, breadth and quality of accountancy knowledge in accounting and finance,” she said, adding that students of the post degree course will be able to gain the CPA designation upon completion of the CPA Program examinations and work experience.

Lee said that the collaboration between CPA Australia and Swinburne Sarawak marks a new chapter in professionalising accounting education.

Graduates of Swinburne Sarawak’s Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) and Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Finance) programmes are likely to be able to commence the CPA Program right after graduation as both programs are accredited by CPA Australia.

“Swinburne Sarawak has an excellent track record in educating business and management graduates for industry,” said Lee.

An example is the Master of Human Resource Management course which the university contextualised for the Sarawak civil service and delivered in conjunction with the Centre for Modern Management, added Dr Ho Chye Kok, Senior Lecturer and Associate Dean for postgraduate and professional education.

“As a result of the university’s collaboration with industry partners, and professional bodies, we offer Australian postgraduate education in Sarawak that is more holistic and of significant value to its communities,” said Ho.

The link between business knowledge and practice is the major focus in professionalising accounting education at the university.
