KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus emerged first runner-up in futsal at the MASISWA Champion of Champions Games which was held in Malacca recently.
Of the four matches it played, the team of Malaysian and international students from the Australian branch campus won two and lost one. One match was a walkover as the opposing team failed to turn up.
It was easy pickings for the team in their last match in the league, scoring six goals past Geomatika College International while letting in only two goals.
Swinburne Sarawak also had little trouble when it faced Universiti Teknologi Petronas, winning 3-1.
However, the toughest match of the tournament for the students from Denmark, Tanzania, Uganda, Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak was the showdown with INTI International University. They failed to convert all the chances they created into goals and made mistakes which were quickly capitalised by INTI. At the final whistle it was INTI 2, Swinburne Sarawak 0.
In the match between Swinburne Sarawak and University College Shah Putra, the latter was a no-show.
INTI emerged champion while University Teknologi Petronas was second runner-up.
About 1,300 athletes competed in futsal, volleyball, tenpin bowling, badminton, netball and rugby in the three-day MASISWA Games which was hosted by Multimedia University, Malacca, from 13 to 15 December.
Swinburne Sarawak competed only in futsal and it was the only team from East Malaysia to compete in the national level Games.
