KUCHING – The student-led Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) chapter at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus was recently awarded for outstanding achievements.
Its parent body, the Institution of Engineering and Technology Malaysia Network, presented the Swinburne Sarawak IET affiliate with the “Best On Campus Award” for the 2014/2015 period.
The award is given out annually to student divisions in recognition of commendable contribution towards members and the community.
The Swinburne Sarawak IET committee, made up of undergraduate students, was individually awarded for leadership skills that stood out among other chapter candidates in the country.
Its president Daniel Vong Wei Liang, honorary secretary Desmond Chin Chung Choon, marketing and publicity officer Adrian Teo, and recruitment and rectification officer Daniel Sim Yeat Han, received the “IET Leadership Award”.
“The activities the club had put together throughout the period, including mentoring and training as well as networking, allowed its members to experience first-hand, real-world exposure in professional engineering,” said Dr Chua Hong Siang, the club’s main advisor.
The Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science senior lecturer said the work of the student chapter was in line with the vision of IET to engineer a better world by inspiring, informing, and influencing the global engineering community as well as supporting technology innovation to meet the needs of the society.
The Swinburne Sarawak student division is the first IET chapter in East Malaysia and to date has about 250 student members. Since it was established in 2010, it has won many awards, including the “Most Promising Chapter” in its first year and again in 2012. It was first runner-up for the title last year.
Previously known as the Swinburne Sarawak IET Student Chapter, it was renamed Swinburne Sarawak IET On Campus this year.
