KUCHING – The Industry-Academia Sharing and Collaboration Workshop recently co-organised by Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Sarawak Subsection served as a significant platform for fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange between industry and academia, particularly in the context of Industry 4.0.
Held on 10 October 2023 at Swinburne Sarawak, the key objective of the workshop was to create a space where industry professionals and academics could come together to identify and share research projects, with the ultimate goal of fostering co-innovation and meaningful collaboration between these two essential sectors.
The event featured three prominent speakers, each recognised for their expertise in distinct areas of Industry 4.0. Ts Dr Chua Wen-Shyan, Head of Malaysian Smart Factory 4.0 under the Selangor Human Resource Development Centre (SHRDC), spoke on ‘Sustainable Digital Transformation towards Industry 4.0’.
Associate Professor Dr Tan Chong Eng of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, who also leads the 5G & Connectivity Keylab appointed by Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), presented on ‘Guarding the Gates: Cybersecurity Challenges in Phishing and IoT’.
Mr Sew Chang Wei, Head of Department at IME Group, delivered insights on ‘Industry 4.0: Collaborative Robot for SME’.

The event attracted an enthusiastic response, with more than 30 participants representing over 10 enterprises and industries. The diverse backgrounds and experiences of the participants contributed to a rich and engaging discussion during the workshop.
The workshop provided a valuable platform for participants to learn about the latest developments in Industry 4.0, including topics such as sustainable digital transformation, cybersecurity challenges and collaborative robotics. The exchange of ideas and experiences facilitated a deeper understanding of how academia and industry can work together for mutual benefit.
The Industry-Academia Sharing and Collaboration Workshop was an initiative supported by the IEEE R10 (Region 10 – Asia Pacific) Industry Relations Committee, and the event organising team was led by Ts Dr Kelvin Yong Sheng Chek and Ir Dr Hudyjaya Siswoyo Jo of Swinburne Sarawak’s Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science.
It proved to be an enlightening and collaborative event, addressing critical topics related to Industry 4.0 and its implications for both academia and industry.
The insights shared by the speakers, coupled with the diverse perspectives of the participants, made this event a significant step in strengthening the bonds between academia and industry and fostering innovation in the dynamic field of Industry 4.0. It showcased the potential for further collaboration and knowledge exchange in the future, contributing to the advancement of technology and academia in this region.
