Kuching – Dr How Bing Shen of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus did the university proud when he bagged the Young Researcher Award at IChemE Global Award 2021.
How, a lecturer with the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science of the university was commended for developing many novel innovations including a statistical optimisation tool that improves the performance of water-oil re-refinery in Malaysia. He has also collaborated in many national projects such as evaluating the feasibility of a hydrogen production plant project and strategically determining optimal fertilizer formulation for a palm oil plantation. Among his research include work on sustainable biomass supply chain management, green hydrogen network synthesis, and circular economy development.
A strong believer of knowledge transfer, How believes that a good researcher should be committed to knowledge sharing and transfer. “Research is meaningless unless the knowledge generated is transferred,” How stressed.
He is also active in numerous community services including conducting a technical workshop for researchers, sharing research findings with the community and nurturing next-gen young researchers through mentorship and guidance.
On receiving the award How is grateful for the opportunities that Swinburne Sarawak has given him and enthused over the support he received from his research collaborators. An early career researcher, How demonstrated a strong track record in publications with more than 60 articles under his name. Given his research excellence, he has won multiple internal research grants and secured numerous state and national grants.

Dr How is also the associate editor in Frontiers in Sustainability, a peer-reviewed, cutting-edge research journal that addresses numerous issues in engineering, sustainability, and the environment.
The IChemE Global Awards celebrate chemical, process and biochemical engineering excellence and are widely considered as the world’s most prestigious chemical engineering awards. Dr How was selected to represent Malaysia, having won the Young Research Award in IChemE Malaysia Award 2021, to compete in the IChemE Global Awards 2021 under the Young Researcher category alongside five talented finalists from other top tier institutions around the globe.
The finals of the award were held as a series of webinars from 5 to 15 October which saw 120 finalists from 20 countries vying for the Excellence trophy in chemical, biochemical and process engineering.
