KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus recently conducted the inaugural ‘BIM (Building Information Modelling) Concept and Theory’ training module at the Swinburne Sarawak myBIM satellite centre located at the Kuching campus.
A total of 22 participants from the industry as well as academics attended the one-day training. It is part of the seven Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) BIM module training developed by myBIM and endorsed by a panel of industry experts. It serves as a pre-requite for all advanced modules including Fundamental Modelling of Architecture, Fundamental Modelling of Structure, BIM Coordinator Part 1 & 2 and BIM Manager Part 1 & 2.
The module, also developed in line with the Construction Industry Transformation Plan (CITP) productivity thrust to transform the construction industry, aims to train BIM modellers, coordinators and managers in preparation for broader BIM adoption throughout the country by 2020. In recent years, six CIDB myBIM satellite centres have been established in universities nationwide including in Sarawak to facilitate BIM education and training.
The Swinburne Sarawak myBIM satellite centre launched in June this year is led by the university’s industry-driven BIM research team comprising Ir. Dr Angelia Liew San Chuin, Dr Victor Bong Nee Shin, PhD candidate Ghazaleh Khoshdelnezamiha and Siti Nurfarahin. The team aims to take the leading role in spearheading the use of BIM in the construction industry through education, training, research and development.
The centre consists of a sophisticated computer laboratory well equipped with the latest software for BIM implementation. In addition to providing the facilities for practitioners to accommodate BIM training programmes, the centre is also part of Swinburne Sarawak’s commitment to encourage continued professional development in the workforce today.
The university also offers other short courses for professional development via Swinburne Innovation Malaysia Sdn Bhd where the courses are designed to prepare participants for future career challenges consistent with the ever-changing industry and community expectations. Its Chief Executive Officer Associate Professor Wallace Wong said the courses are highly focused and provide the necessary skills for participants to go further in their careers.
The next ‘BIM Concept and Theory’ one-day training module will be held on 24 September 2018 and it is now open for registration. This will be followed by ‘Four-Day Fundamental Modelling of Architecture, 29 to 30 September and 6 to 7 October 2018’ and ‘Four-Day Fundamental Modelling of Structure, 20 to 21 October and 27 to 28 October 2018’.
