SMK Tun Abang Haji Openg is 7-Aside Inter-school champion

KUCHING – SMK Tun Abang Haji Openg won the Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus 7-Aside Inter-school Football Tournament after beating SMK Kota Samarahan 3-2 in a penalty shootout, recently.

The two sides were locked in a one all draw after playing into full time at the Swinburne Sarawak multipurpose field.

Trailing behind SMK Kota Samarahan in third place was SMK Bau.

As champions, the jubilant SMK Tun Abang Haji Openg team took home RM300, a trophy and medals.

The second and third place winners were awarded RM200 and RM100, respectively, and medals.

Mohamad Aidiel Bin Mohamad Raimi from SMK St Joseph emerged as the top scorer of the tournament. He scored nine goals.

A total of five secondary schools took part in the tournament, organised for the first time by Swinburne Sarawak. They are SMK Bau, SMK St Joseph, SMK Kota Samarahan, SMK Tun Abang Haji Openg and MRSM Kuching.

A team from Swinburne Sarawak comprising Foundation students also competed for the champion’s trophy.

“This is our inaugural event and we hope to see a bigger and better event next year with more schools taking part. The tournament is certainly good exposure for the students, and I’m sure, it will give the school teams an additional goal to work towards each year,” said Tuan Haji Hussain Taiban, Registrar and Director of Student Operations at the university.
