RM1.6 million in scholarships and support schemes for postgraduate research studies

KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus is awarding RM1.6 million in scholarships and other financial support schemes to those who are interested to pursue postgraduate research studies at the university.

The scholarships offered are the Swinburne University Postgraduate Research Awards (SUPRA), and the Swinburne Sarawak Postgraduate Research Studentship (SPRS) schemes.

The SUPRA is awarded to students of exceptional research potential undertaking doctoral studies, while the SPRS is offered for both PhD and master research studies.

Both scholarship schemes offer a full fee-waiver and a monthly stipend of at least RM1,400.

Three places are available for SUPRA, and seven for SPRS this year.

Places are awarded through open competition, and the last date for application is 8 November, 2013.

Meanwhile, for those who are unable to secure a scholarship the university offers partial fee-waivers where course fees are reduced by up to 75% for deserving applicants to pursue their postgraduate research studies at Swinburne Sarawak.

A total of 10 places are available and applications are open throughout 2013 and 2014.

“These scholarships and financial support schemes are offered as part of the university’s commitment to expand our research capabilities,” said Associate Professor Wallace Wong, Director of the Research and Consultancy Office at Swinburne Sarawak.

Last year, the university committed RM40 million over a seven-year period to raise the level of research and establish a reputation for addressing problems of science, technology, and innovation that are relevant for Sarawak and the region.

“To achieve this target, one of the strategies is to enlarge the cohort of research students and provide them with the necessary opportunities, education, and support,” Wong said.

Through this, Swinburne Sarawak hopes to attract the best research students from all over the world and enable them to produce high-quality and socially-relevant research outcomes.
