Over 300 attend CPA Australia student conference at Swinburne Sarawak

KUCHING – The second CPA Australia Undergraduate Conference which was held at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus received overwhelming response with more than 300 students from the university in attendance.

Organised by the CPA Australia Student Charter of Swinburne Sarawak in collaboration with CPA Australia Malaysia Division, the conference attracted students pursuing accounting as well as other disciplines such as engineering.

The conference themed ‘Challenge the boundaries’ was aimed at exposing participants to the real world of accounting and business, and to provide a platform for learning and sharing with updates from various speakers on current issues in the professional workforce.

The speakers at the event were Michael Reyes, CEO of Money Tree Asia Pacific Limited, and Dr Edward Lim, Council Member for CPA Australia Malaysia Division.

Reyes spoke on challenges in the entrepreneurial journey and shared real-life experiences of those who overcame these challenges with the participants.

He also discussed financing ideas, “attacking” a global market, as well as scaling new heights through strategic alliances.

In his message to participants Reyes said, “As an entrepreneur, a lot of your success (or failure) will have to do with your attitude. It’s easy to be optimistic when things are going well but what do you do when things go wrong?”

He urged the participants, to have a positive attitude because by doing so “you are mentally expecting success”.

Reyes also reminded the audience that knowledge is not power, but power is determined by how that knowledge is applied.

Lim, meanwhile, was pleased with the turnout for the event. “CPA Australia has been organizing such conferences all over Malaysia. So, having more than 300 students in attendance at this conference is impressive,” he said.

Lim encouraged students to step outside their comfort zone, maintain an open mind in facing challenges and maintain the right attitude in order to move forward.

On internship programs for students, he said it is important as they will benefit from the practical work experience.

Lam Kee Soon, president of CPA Australia Malaysia Division, in his message advised the students to set career goals before joining the workforce.

“However, in order to achieve these goals, you must first understand that the learning process never stops,” he said, adding that to stand out they needed an extra edge. “The CPA designation gives you that,” he said.
