KUCHING – A collaboration between Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus and the Academy of Language Studies, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Sarawak has led to the creation of an award-winning educational tool designed to make mastering English grammar an exciting adventure. Shopper’s Delight 2.0, a unique board game, earned the prestigious gold medal at the iEDGII 2024 competition, solidifying its position as a groundbreaking tool in English language education.
A fresh, interactive approach to teaching ESL is introduced through the board game. It targets common challenges like adjective order confusion, noun misclassification, and limited vocabulary. Combining educational rigour with engaging gameplay, Shopper’s Delight 2.0 transforms traditional grammar lessons into vibrant, hands-on experiences through question cards, bonus rounds, and immersive activities that keep learners invested.
“We wanted to create something that was both educational and fun,” said Siti Jamilah Muhammad Haneef Ali, Swinburne’s sole representative on the all-women project team. “Games like this allow us to rethink traditional language teaching methods and make learning more interactive.”
Siti Jamilah played a pivotal role in the game’s development, contributing to its visual design, including the board and packaging, to ensure it appealed to a wide audience. She also developed mathematical questions embedded in the gameplay, adding a multidisciplinary dimension to the learning process. Her expertise also helped streamline the game mechanics in version 2, making it easier for players to understand and engage with the content.
“With Shopper’s Delight 2.0, we’ve created a platform where learners feel empowered to experiment with language in a fun, non-intimidating environment,” Siti Jamilah explained. “It’s about encouraging confidence and curiosity in every learner.”
The Swinburne Sarawak-UiTM partnership began with the first version of the game, in which Siti Jamilah played a major role in designing the game and developing the questions, integrating English language comprehension into the gameplay.
Designed for both classroom and home use, Shopper’s Delight 2.0 takes a gamified approach to English learning, enabling players to build vocabulary, master sentence construction, and apply their skills to real-world contexts. For educators, it offers a dynamic tool to foster collaboration, active participation, and sustained engagement among students.
The gold medal awarded to the team at iEDGII 2024 is a recognition of the team’s innovative work and highlights the potential of interdisciplinary solutions to transform education. This success not only underscores the importance of creative approaches in language teaching but also reflects the power of collaboration across institutions.
