KUCHING – A design exhibition at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus is set to thrill visitors this Saturday, 14 December 2013.
The “Swinburne Design Experience” exhibition will be held in conjunction with the Open Day of the university from 10am to 5pm.
It will showcase the work of multimedia and graphic design students from their first to final year, and those created by the university’s design alumni for industries in Malaysia and abroad.
The collection includes displays created with technologies such as virtual reality with Oculus Rift, Motion sensors with Leap motion and Augmented Reality.
A range of medium from typography, packaging, corporate identity, magazines layout, photography to iPad interface design make up the graphic design exhibits.
“Those who are considering design as a course of study will find the exhibition helpful as it will give them an insight into what is involved and the skills they will acquire,” Augustus Raymond, Associate Dean for Design.
Augustus encourages visitors to try their hand on the games other interactive platforms which the students designed and created on PCs, iPads and Nokia devices.
Testimonials and samples of work created for industry by the university’s design alumni shed light on their careers.
“I’m currently working as a 2D animator in Kuala Lumpur. I’ve learnt a lot from Swinburne, from design principles, creative thinking, design solutions to teamwork, and most importantly increased my passion towards design and animation. Today, I apply these teachings in my job as an animator,” said multimedia design graduate Bryan Yong in his testimonial.
Indonesian Amelia, now a graphic designer in Bandung said, “During my time at Swinburne I learned how to think creatively and create conceptual work. I have also learnt to come up with great ideas and execute them well.”
“The displays reflect their skills, ideas and passion. This exhibition shows what they are capable of with the right training, and the many career options open to design graduates,” Augustus said.
He said the students and staff took 12 weeks to put together the exhibition and they, along with the industry partners and sponsors, have the university’s heartfelt appreciation.
Industry partners from Malaysia and abroad including Acer, Borneo TRUEvents, Impact Design, itFusion, Multimedia Development Corporation, Nokia, Sarawak Museum, and Sarawak Tourism Board are expected at the exhibition.
Lecturers from the design faculty, including professional Australian designer Monita Roughsedge, will be available for consultation on design courses.
Roughsedge, who has spent more than 25 years in the design industry and lectures at the university, will also conduct a short presentation on the importance of design and its career pathways.
