Overwhelmingly positive response received at blood donation drive held by IEM-SSSS and SGH Blood Bank

KUCHING – IEM-Swinburne Sarawak Student Section (IEM-SSSS) in collaboration with the Blood Bank of Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) held a one-day blood donation drive at The Spring, Kuching on 17 April 2021.

The objectives of the blood donation drive were to maintain a safe and adequate blood supply for the community, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, and to raise awareness that individuals can save lives and improve the health of others by donating blood.

The event started at 10am with full adherence to the standard operating procedure (SOP) set by the Malaysian Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Malaysian National Security Council (NSC) to curb the spread of Covid-19.  The venue layout was arranged to support physical distancing, while hand sanitisers were provided on every table and the use of face masks was mandatory throughout the event.

The organising committee targeted 50 pints of blood from the donation drive. However, due to the overwhelming response, a total of 67 pints of blood were collected. All the donors were provided with refreshments and received donor gifts as a token of appreciation.

It was good to note that Swinburne students are very positive towards donating blood and many of them are regular donors.

IEM-SSSS conveyed its gratitude to the sponsors of the event, namely Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus (merchandise sponsor), John’s Pie’s (refreshment sponsor), Ma Hung Food Stuff (bags of rice) and Ding Max Sdn Bhd (YOOGANE discount vouchers).  The organising committee also acknowledged the venue sponsor, The Spring Management Services Sdn Bhd.

The blood donation drive ended at 3pm. It was a huge success with an overwhelmingly positive response from the community; a remarkable and meaningful event for all.
