151 Swinburne students awarded more than RM400,000 in scholarships

KUCHING – A total of 151 of students from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus who scored impressive results in public and semester exams. were awarded a total of RM407,500 in scholarships yesterday, 7 May 2008.

Categorised as Entrance, Leadership and Merit, the scholarship awards were presented to the recipients by Professor Helmut Lueckenhausen, the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Swinburne Sarawak.

At the ceremony, 107 students who had recently enrolled for foundation and undergraduate courses with the university were awarded the Entrance scholarships.

This scholarship category is specially given to those with impressive SPM and STPM results.

Five new students, who had achieved good results and who had been actively involved in extra-curricular activities while in secondary school were presented with Leadership scholarships.

Of the five, one was formerly from Sekolah Seri Suria and two each from SMK DPHJ Abd Gapor and Chung Hua Middle School No. 1.

Meanwhile, 39 students who are pursuing undergraduate courses were awarded Merit scholarships for achieving high distinctions and distinctions at their recent semester exams.

Recipients of the Entrance and Merit scholarship categories included students from nine countries: Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Kenya, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.

Among those who were present at the ceremony were parents and families of the scholarship recipients as well as representatives from the scholarship recipients’ former schools.

Also attending the ceremony were the heads of schools and departments of the university.

Swinburne Sarawak awards eligible students with scholarships each semester and scholarship application is currently open for its July and August intake.
