Our code of conduct outlines user responsibilities that help create a library environment we can all enjoy. Swinburne community is entitled to use Swinburne Library services and collections and to enjoy an environment conducive to study and research. You have a responsibility to help staff ensure the library is a great place to meet, learn and study.
What’s expected Follow the guidelines for behaviour to create a great library experience for everybody.
When you use the library facilities, equipment and/or resources:
– You must scan your valid Swinburne ID card at the Retractable Flap Barrier Gate in order to enter or exit the library.
– You must not share your Swinburne ID card with others.
– You must not damage, vandalise, hide, or steal library materials or property.
– You must not leave your personal belongings unattended at the computer workstations and other study desks in the library. If personal belongings are unattended for more than 15 minutes, they will be removed.
– The university is not responsible for any loss or damage to personal belongings that are left unattended or removed.
When you use library computing equipment and resources:
– You must not install unauthorised software, or alter software (such as changing program setups) on library computers.
– You must not use Library computing facilities for purposes other than legitimate educational, research and administrative purposes of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus.
– You must not breach any licence terms or conditions of software, or other resources installed or used on library computers.
– You must not access inappropriate web sites, obscene material, or make reproductions that infringe intellectual property laws such as copyright.
– You must not refuse to vacate computer workstations once bookings have expired.
– You must not behave in a loud and disruptive manner that upsets other users.
You must not disrupt research or study or interfere with the use of the library:
– Do not create excessive noise or rowdiness, or participate in anti-social and offensive behaviour.
– Do not participate in loud conversations in non-designated group study areas.
– Do not intimidate and harass Library staff or other library users.
– Do not talk on mobile phones in designated quiet study areas.
You must not create an unhealthy or unpleasant environment:
– Do not smoke, consume alcohol, or use illegal substances in the Library.
– Do not consume food or drink in the library.
– Do not drop litter the library; use the rubbish bins provided.
– Do not refuse to leave the library at closing time or during an emergency evacuation.
Library users are required to comply with all applicable laws, policies and rules.
Avoid penalties
Failure to observe rules and this Code of Conduct may lead to eviction from the Library, or withdrawal of Library privileges. Legal action may also be taken in cases of unlawful activity.

The library manages an integrated collection of physical and online information resources to support teaching, learning and research at Swinburne and selects, acquires and provides access to these resources for Swinburne Sarawak staff, students and researchers.
Resources are available at Swinburne Sarawak Library and online via the Swinburne Sarawak’s library website. Acquisitions Services is the central unit that manages acquisition, licencing and online access provision.
Our collection is managed by the library management system, Angka.Sa.2 and Serials Solutions SUMMON. Discovery and access are provided through OPAC and SUMMON.
Library resources are selected and approved based on a range of criteria including:
We focus on selecting high use resources that support teaching, learning and research at Swinburne Sarawak. Approval from Dean/Head of School/Head of Management Unit is required for recommendations by staff and students. Library user is to check the requested title on the online catalogue (OPAC) before placing their request to avoid duplicate acquisitions.
Request for library materials can be made by completing the requisition form or send it by email to the relevant Library Liaison Officer or library staff. Full details are to be provided such as title, author and format (book, journal/magazine, video, DVD, etc.); publisher and date or edition; ISBN; name of requestor. If any of this information is missing, the order process will be delayed.
The library’s priority is to maximise access to online content to deliver information resources to the widest possible audience. Online formats are preferred where they meet the information needs of users subject to budget, licensing and technical requirements.
Evaluation and selection of physical and online resources for the library’s collection will take into account available physical and online infrastructure and intended use.
For physical resources this includes shelving, storage, booking, loan and use. For online resources this includes software and hardware requirements, authentication, limitations on access and intended use. As a rule, resources with requirements that limit their open and effective use will not be acquired.
Library resources are acquired to maximise access. Where possible, physical resources will be available in the general collection and online resources will be open to all Swinburne Sarawak users. Requests to limit use of physical and/or online resources must be approved by the lecturer(s) and library.
Copyright law and licenses are considered in the evaluation and selection of physical and online resources. As a rule, resources with licensing requirements that limit their effective use will not be acquired.
The library manages the library materials budget. We aim to acquire and provide information resources that maximise use and meet the needs of all library users. Due to costs it may not be possible to acquire or provide access to all requested resources. The library will make decisions based on the current and projected annual budgets, expenditures, and encumbrances.
Subscriptions or continuous orders commit the library to ongoing expenditure in future years. As a rule, new subscriptions may require cancellation of an existing subscription to an equivalent amount. Subscriptions will in most cases be considered on an annual basis.
Students are expected to purchase required textbooks. The library will acquire a limited number of textbooks and recommended readings. The library does not acquire class sets or online resources that can only be used in a classroom environment.
Most library collections are acquired for general use. Special collections with specific requirements for acquisition or use must be approved by the Library and the Head of Management Unit. Special collections form part of the overall library collection.
Electronic copy of all final year projects and theses are deposited with the library; which is accessible to only Swinburne community from library’s website.
Swinburne Sarawak staff may request that personal or departmental owned resources or items be temporarily loaned to the library collection. If accepted, loaned resources and equipment will be managed according to the usual library business rules regarding booking, loan and use.
Donations to the library will be considered according to the usual selection criteria applied to other resources. If accepted, donations will become part of the general library collection and subject to normal business rules including deselection.
The library will manage the physical and online collections on an ongoing basis and deselect materials that are no longer relevant, out of date, in poor physical condition, no longer conform to technical or licensing requirements, do not demonstrate ongoing usage, or that are being deselected to allow release of funds to acquire more relevant or cost-effective resources.
Proposals for acquisition of resources outside the scope of this policy must be referred to the Information Resources Manager or via your liaison librarian

Library has added another payment option for users to pay their printing reload, library fines and lost of book charges at library counter, with the use of eWallet ‘Sarawak Pay’ effective 1st October 2018. |
Digital Contents | Theses and Final Year Projects Collection is now available for viewing through the library website and through OPAC. This collection is only accessible to Swinburne Sarawak communities through their Angka.sa2 account. ‘Refine your search’ is a feature on our library website that allows users to access collection based on specific subjects and disciplines. Referencing section of the website is now available with APA Style Guide module. Since December 2018, library quick guides for major databases were made available to help users to quickly retrieve relevant information from the thousands of records in our database. A new Academic Integrity (AI) video has been created to increase awareness on AI among students. The video was made available on the library website and Canvas Learning Management System since April 2019. |
Digital Information Kiosk | Digital Information Kiosk has been upgraded with the installation of a 40’ inch screen and more sensitive touch sensors to give library users a better and user-friendly experience while doing searches on library services and facilities at the kiosk |
Collection Development | Every year, the library strive to continue developing collections and resources to meet the teaching and research demands for the university. Areas notable for building its collection are cybersecurity, law and diploma of business management. Since January 2019, the library has started subscribing to PressReader – an eMagazine and eNewspaper platform that is available for download on iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac with access to more than 7,100 global publications. |
