KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus recently welcomed the Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, His Excellency Rod Smith, to the university.
Smith, who was on a one day visit to Kuching, stopped by the university and was received by Swinburne Sarawak Deputy Vice-Chancellor and CEO Professor Anthony Cahalan, Board of Directors members Datu (Dr) Haji Abdul Rashid Bin Mohd Azis and Datuk (Dr) Philip Ting Ding Ing. Ting is also Australian Honorary Consul.
At a welcome reception attended by senior management and senior academic staff, Smith was briefed on the achievements of the university, its focus and growth in research, collaboration with industry, and the support provided by the Sarawak government, among others.
Cahalan expressed appreciation for the cooperation and support accorded to the university by the Australian government through the High Commission in Kuala Lumpur where Smith is based.
“Education is an important feature in Malaysia and Swinburne is a very big part of that story,” said Smith, who assumed his role as high commissioner last year.
He said the Australian government is supportive of the roles of Australian universities in Malaysia.
There are currently three Australian university branch campuses in the country.
Prior to his departure, the high commissioner toured the facilities at Swinburne Sarawak.
Smith had first visited Kuching for the APEC Ministers meeting in 1998.
