KUCHING – The Swinburne Dragon Boat Club’s (SDBC) race team, the Swinburne Dragons, delivered an outstanding performance at the recent Sarawak International Dragon Boat Regatta (SIDBR) 2024, securing a semi-final spot while competing against 54 teams from 21 countries.
Competing in the International Premier Mix 12, International Premier Open 12 and International Premier Open 20 categories, the Swinburne Dragons showcased the diversity of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus’ international community. The team’s 26 members hailed from Sarawak, Johor, Penang, Kenya and Myanmar.
Despite most team members competing for the first time, the International Premier Mix 12 crew excelled, advancing to the semi-finals after a commanding victory in the heats. They triumphed against formidable opponents, including teams from the United Kingdom, Penang and Putrajaya.
Although the International Premier Open 12 and International Premier Open 20 crews narrowly missed semi-final qualifications, they achieved personal bests, clocking impressive times of 1 minute 21 seconds and 1 minute 17 seconds respectively.
The team was coached by Swinburne alumnus Ms Octavia Teo Siew Foong, who praised their dedication and resilience.
“This year, we faced a significant turnover, with members leaving for studies or graduating after 2023. While challenging, it was an opportunity to rebuild from the ground up, focusing on techniques, stamina and endurance. The team worked tirelessly under the sun to prepare for SIDBR 2024. My hope is that they’ve formed lasting friendships, embraced the thrill of international competition and paddled without regrets,” she said.
Meanwhile, team manager Dr James Loi Chun Han commended the crew for their outstanding performance in the Mixed 12 category, which requires 10 paddlers, a drummer and a steerer.
“Facing strong teams, both familiar and new, was daunting, but the paddlers rose to the challenge, showcasing exceptional effort and adaptability,” he remarked.
The Swinburne Dragons’ excellent performance at SIDBR 2024 highlights their commitment to excellence and the strength of their diverse community, setting a strong foundation for future success in international dragon boat racing.
