The event brought together sixty-five students and teachers from SMK Sg Tapang and SMK Padungan, along with Swinburne Sarawak’s academic and professional staff, to raise awareness about the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #2: Zero Hunger. Through engaging workshops on biotechnology and graphic design, the participants explored innovative solutions to address food security and sustainability challenges.
The event’s highlight was the SDG Carnival’s opening ceremony. The ceremony featured inspiring presentations by PiCiT 2024 speakers on pressing global issues and potential solutions. YB Wilfred Yap, representing the Ministry of Women, Early Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development, also presented in-kind donations to SKUP, symbolizing the collective commitment to combatting hunger.
According to Norizan Tan, SKUP Up Hunger Chairperson, the event’s aimed to raise awareness and empower students to become agents of change. “I am grateful for the support that we’d received from individuals and organisations who came forward to make this event a success,” she said.
Meanwhile Kapitan Bernadette Geiki, representing SKUP, acknowledged the event’s significance in addressing the needs of Kuching’s urban poor. “We have a team of dedicated and passionate volunteers who are keen to continue with this effort, and of which the support from all communities is much appreciated,” Kapitan Bernadette remarked.
