KUCHING – A total of 64 students have been awarded certificates for completing Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus’ English Enhancement Program (EEP), effectively improving their English language skills in preparation for their tertiary studies.
The EEP Certificate Award Ceremony was held at the university campus on 21 July 2023 and graced by Yayasan Sarawak Deputy Director (Education) Mr Louis Simon Peter. Also in attendance were Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer Ir Professor Lau Hieng Ho, Swinburne Sarawak Executive Group members and students’ families.
The EEP is specially designed to enhance students’ English language proficiency while paving the way for a smooth transition into university life. Sponsored by Yayasan Sarawak and open to all Sarawakian students who meet the entry criteria, the program offers a one-off allowance of RM300 and free on-campus accommodation for students.
Throughout the four-week program, students have the opportunity to hone their English communication, reading and writing skills through an immersive approach. They also attend motivational sessions, skills workshops and activities which help to enhance their social skills. In addition, the students get the chance to visit exciting locations in Kuching such as the Borneo Cultures Museum and the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Building.
Upon completing the EEP, students can articulate seamlessly into Swinburne Sarawak’s program intakes and begin their journey towards getting a world-class Australian education.
“Since we first launched the EEP last year, we have had two batches of students successfully completing the program, and a majority of them later enrolled into Swinburne’s main programs,” said Professor Lau.
“This shows that the EEP not only enhances students’ English skills, but also helps them to boost their confidence, make new friends, get to know Swinburne better and ultimately, make a smoother transition into university life,” he said.

In his speech at the ceremony, Mr Louis strongly encouraged all EEP graduates to progress with their tertiary education at Swinburne Sarawak, pointing out that the programs offered by the university are professionally accredited and internationally recognised.
“In this respect, Yayasan Sarawak and Swinburne are working closely to support more Sarawakians in gaining access to high-quality Australian education,” he said.
One of the students who received his EEP certificate of completion, Jilli anak Jessy Jamau, shared that the program had effectively helped him to improve his English language and presentation skills.
“I would definitely recommend the EEP to my friends and juniors. This program is so much fun and you get to meet a lot of amazing people,” he said.
