Healthy Eating That Comes with Entrepreneurship and Business Skills

By Communications Team

It’s lunchtime! As your stomach rumbles, we know how tempting it is to reach towards a comforting bowl of kolo mee or laksa to satisfy your hunger pangs.

But… have you found yourself craving something just a little greener and fresher? Maybe you’ve been trying to eat healthier or maybe you’re regretting your late-night Netflix and junk food binge (no judgment – we’ve all been there).

Well, you’re in luck!

Read on as Business Lecturer Dr Gabriel Wee Wei En shares about Healthy Delights and the wholesome food options it provides. Dr Wee, who is also an advisor of the Swinburne Sarawak Business Society, is currently managing the enterprise.

Healthy Delights is a student-led enterprise selling salad bowls and fresh vegetables at Swinburne Sarawak – providing affordable, healthy food options for the university community.

Established in 2022 and conveniently located at the university’s cafeteria, the enterprise received seed funding from Datuk Philip Ting, Proprietor of Serapi Farm Sdn Bhd and a long-time supporter of entrepreneurship education at Swinburne Sarawak.

Learning the ropes of running a business

Through Healthy Delights, students are able to gain valuable real-world experience in running a business, from sourcing ingredients to preparing and serving food, handling customer service, and managing finances.

Operating the enterprise also exposes students to the challenges of the industry, such as sourcing ingredients, food safety and health, and dealing with food waste.

Students have the opportunity to harness their creativity and innovation, whether it’s developing new recipes, experimenting with new ingredients, or creating new marketing strategies.

They are able to develop a range of skills which are valuable in the workplace, including leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork. They can also enjoy and benefit from networking opportunities with entrepreneurs, industry professionals, and other stakeholders in the food and beverage industry.

Furthermore, by sourcing ingredients from local farmers, Healthy Delights supports the local economy and promotes sustainable farming practices. This reduces the environmental impact of the food system and contributes to its sustainability.

Nurturing a healthier community one salad bowl at a time

Fresh salads are offered at Healthy Delights.

The organic fresh salads readily available at Healthy Delights offer an alternative to the traditional fast food options typically found on campus.

This promotes healthy eating habits among students and staff alike, helping to improve the overall health, well-being, and quality of life of the university community.

Among the healthy options offered (at the time of writing) are smoked duck salad, grilled chicken salad, plain salad, and chicken wrap. You can also take your pick of fruit juices such as pineapple, lemon/lime, and watermelon.

Fancy making your own salad at home? Fresh coral lettuce is also available for purchase!

Swinburne Sarawak is committed to promoting entrepreneurship starting with the Swinburne community, providing students with valuable kills and opportunities, and promoting innovation and economic growth. Through these efforts, the university also stays relevant to the industry and is able to encourage social responsibility and contribute to the local community.
