9th series of IEEE INEC welcomes delegates from 15 countries

KUCHING  The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Singapore Section and IEEE Malaysia Sarawak Subsection organised the 9th IEEE International Nanoelectronic Conference (INEC) 2019 held recently at Pullman Hotel Kuching.

IEEE INEC 2019 is an international platform for the discussion on recent advances in the areas of nanoelectronics, nanodevices and nanosystems. This year’s conference is the ninth in a series of successful conferences initiated by the Nanotech Chapter of IEEE Singapore section since 2006. Carrying the theme ‘Nanoelectronics and Digital Applications’, this series aimed to focus on the translational from research outcomes into real applications.

The three-day event was held in collaboration with Sarawak Convention Bureau with technical sponsors from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Singapore University of Technology and Design, Nanyang Technology University Singapore, and Chang Gung University Taiwan.

The conference was planned by an organising committee comprising professors from Taiwan, China, India, Singapore and Malaysia, and assisted by students from Swinburne led by the university’s Deputy Head of School of Engineering Dr Chua Hong Siang.

The conference featured keynote speeches from speakers invited from Japan, Canada, Austria, and United Kingdom. The four distinguished speakers included Dr Morinobu Endo, Distinguished Professor at Shinshu University; Dr Federico Rosei, Professor and Director of Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique; Dr Gehan Amaratunga, Professor at University of Cambridge; and Dr Siegfried Selberherr, Professor at Technische Universität Wien.

The delegates hailed from 15 countries namely Algeria, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and the United Kingdom. They presented their work on their individual topics of interest which included areas in nanoelectronics, low-dimensional materials, nanophotonics, nanomedicine, carbon materials, and more. There were also display of high-end advanced equipment by several vendors alongside oral and poster sessions.

Among the highlights of the event was a visit to the Sarawak Cultural Village on the second day of the conference which gave the delegates a chance to experience the unique cultures of different ethnic groups and the natural beauty of Sarawak. During the visit, the delegates were feted to local Sarawakian delicacies and ended with a presentation of the Best Paper Award ceremony.

The Best Paper Award was conferred to Ong Sheau Wei from National University of Singapore with her paper titled ‘Photo-Induced Electron Transfer from Hematite and Zinc Oxide Nanostructures to Cytochrome C: Systems Applicable to Spintronics’, and Lucivaldo Reis Menezes from Federal University of ABC, Brazil with his paper titled ‘In-Situ Real Time Observation of Sn-Rich Dots and Wires Evolution during Annealing of Compressively Strained GeSn Epitaxial Films’. Each winner received USD100 in cash prize sponsored by the IEEE Nanotechnology Council USA.

IEEE Swinburne Sarawak Student Branch’s active participation on various projects with IEEE Malaysia Sarawak Subsection gives the students an opportunity to network and get involved with technical and local communities. Among their collaborations include an alternative lighting project for generating sustainable energy in Kampung Salak, robotics competition to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in Sarawak, and public seminar on nanoscience.
