Swinburne and PROTON bring cheer to SKUP

KUCHING The Society for Kuching Urban Poor (SKUP) received various types of food items donated by well-wishers who were involved in the recent Proton X70 Ramadan Mubarak Give 2019 donation drive organised by Swinburne and PROTON.

Staff and students of Swinburne contributed items such as bags of rice, salt and sugar, cooking oil, Milo cans, washing detergent and other essential items. The items to be used in SKUP Soup Kitchen project were then delivered to their premises using the Proton X70.

The drive was carried out by Swinburne’s Team Infinity as part of the Proton X70 Intelligence That Inspires Challenge, a contest run by PROTON for higher education institutions in Malaysia. The objective of the challenge is to improve the perception of PROTON’s Gen Y target market towards the brand.

Team Infinity comprised undergraduate and postgraduate students from finance, robotics and mechatronics engineering, and electrical and electronic engineering disciplines namely Jehovah Yii, Samuel Law, Ung Kek Seng, Tie Hieng Hui, Roger Wong and Loh Jia Chiew. They were supervised by Swinburne’s Deputy Head of School of Engineering Dr Chua Hong Siang.

The preliminary round of the contest required participants to prepare a marketing proposal for Proton X70 on the topic ‘How to maintain Proton X70’s position as the No. 1 selling SUV in your city?’. The marketing proposal was judged based on creativity, effectiveness, written presentation and presentation skills. One team from each institution was selected as winner to advance to the Semi Final Round.

Team Infinity managed to win the preliminary round and moved on to represent Swinburne at the Semi Final where the team was required to conduct a community relation activity and prepare a marketing proposal on the topic ‘How to maintain Proton X70’s position as the No. 1 selling SUV in your state?’.

To support the team in product briefing and market survey, team Infinity was paired with Proton Edar Kuching Platinum. Also lending their support to the team’s initiative were Swinburne’s Student Information Centre and Marketing and Student Recruitment Department.

Several activities such as mini games, quizzes and photo booth were held during the two-day donation drive. Guests were also able to test drive the X70 car and took part in survey to gauge their opinions on the X70 and car buying trend in Sarawak. Participants who got the highest score in the quizzes were given Proton and Swinburne merchandises.

SKUP is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that provides welfare service, financial assistance, job placement and skills training to families living below the poverty line in urban areas. Their services enable the families to become self-reliant and consequently raise their standard of living. Currently, SKUP distributes food to more than 200 people daily at various locations in Kuching.
