KUCHING – A 10-day study tour was recently organised by the Swinburne Sarawak Institution of Engineering and Technology On Campus (SSIET) club where they visited 12 companies in Kuching, Penang island, Seberang Perai, Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan.
The group of 20 from electrical and electronic engineering, robotics and mechatronics engineering, civil engineering, computer science, and business disciplines comprised students from various countries including Malaysia, Australia, Hong Kong and Vietnam from the Kuching and Melbourne campuses. They were accompanied by Swinburne’s Deputy Head of School of Engineering Dr Chua Hong Siang, lecturer Ismat Hijazin and organising chairperson Tsen Xin Hui.
They visited companies involved in industries such as semiconductors, machine vision, automation, photovoltaics, 3D printing, high-accuracy measurements, food and beverage, ceramics, industrialised building, and mass transportation. The companies were X-FAB, LONGi, Master-Pack, Kim Hin Industry, ViTrox, Cincaria, Intel Technology, Keysight Technologies, Yakult, Materialise, MMC Gamuda KVMRT, and Gamuda Industrial Building System.

On top of the technical site visits, the students also explored heritage sites and popular tourist attractions such as Batu Caves, National Monument, Merdeka Square, National Palace, Thean Hou Temple, Penang Street Art, Penang Hill, and Chew Jetty. In addition, they attended networking dinners with professionals from the industry where they had a chance to share and exchange information related to their studies and fields of work.
SSIET is an active student chapter of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), a multidisciplinary professional engineering institution based in Stevenage, United Kingdom. Over the years, SSIET had been recognised twice as the best student chapter in Malaysia by IET Malaysia Network, and the best academic club by the University. It is headed by Peter Ling Ting Rang, the first Malaysian to have reached the Global Final of IET Present Around the World Competition in London.
